New Evidence Scotches Gen Z Myths

New data has emerged from consumer predictions consultancy Foresight Factory, challenging the stereotype of the UK’s Generation Z as "lazy" workers.

According to the research, while 49% of global Gen Z desire a slower pace of life, the reality is more nuanced in the UK workplace.

Contrary to the "Great Resignation" trend seen among young American workers, British Gen Z (aged 16-24) are more likely to accept their bosses' authority compared to their US counterparts. The proportion of UK Gen Z fitting that description has risen from 33% to 37% since 2016, while it has fallen from 45% to 30% in the US.

Work plays a crucial role in UK Gen Z's identity. They are more likely than older Britons to say their job is important to their personal identity (28% vs 15% for those over 45). They also value being seen as successful, with 35% globally saying it's important to them.

While Gen Z appreciates the flexibility of remote working, they don't necessarily seek flexible hours more than other generations. In fact, Millennials (54%) and Gen X (56%) are more likely to value flexible hours than them (46%).

Meabh Quoirin, CEO of Foresight Factory, warns against making sweeping generalisations about Gen Z. She suggests that rejection of authority figures may be more about corporate culture misalignment than an aversion to work itself.

Businesses may need to rethink authority structures, avoid global generalisations about Gen Z, consider their influence on work culture, and create opportunities for them to develop leadership skills.

As Gen Z becomes the largest generational workforce by 2025, understanding its diverse attitudes towards work across different cultures will be crucial for businesses and brands seeking to engage effectively.

How to have a breakthrough at work:

Step 1: Get clear on the results you’re committed to create in the next three months and share those with other people. (Most people don’t do this because it takes vulnerability.)

Step 2: Go get a shit tonne of feedback. Find at least one person you really trust and say, “Hey, what do I seem unaware of? Where am I blind?”

This week’s hack comes from Adrian Koehler, Leadership Coach and Co-founder of Take New Ground.
